Arrested Development is unlike any other rap or hip hop group I have ever known. While I don’t relate to their religious messages, their moral messages resonate deeply with me. This song strikes a chord. If I don’t know someone I rarely give them money. However, I will buy them food if I can.
There was one time when I bought a woman a sandwich that has stayed with me for years. This woman was so grateful that she asked if she could give me a hug. I walked over to her and held her close. It’s occurred to me a number of times that the hug might have been more important to her than the food. People need to be treated with dignity and compassion. That’s something everyone deserves. Even if you can’t or won’t give someone money when they ask, you can always smile, look them in the eye, and give a genuine response. Saying no in that way is probably more important than handing them a quarter while averting your eyes.
