I'm not exactly sure why I chose to highlight this John Lee Hooker song for this week. It isn't my favorite of his, though I like it a bunch. I think I chose it, in part, because of how he harmonizes his voice and guitar.

This recording is on an amazing set that I bought from eMusic. It's the Complete Library of Congress Recordings of a set of interviews Alan Lomax did with Jelly Roll Morton. There are 99 tracks and they are selling it for $6.
…I mistakenly remembered the guitar player in Oh Brother Where Art Thou? as being named Robert Johnson. He was actually named Tommy Johnson, so it’s an understandable mistake. The real Tommy Johnson, like Robert Johnson, supposedly made a deal with the devil to master the blues and blues guitar (as seen in the link above).
…I’ve decided this week will be devoted to the blues. The first two installments will be devoted to men with the surname; Johnson. Both of these men supposedly sold their souls to the devil at the crossroads to become the greatest blues musicians of all time.

I love learning new things about music. Mostly because I love music and I really don’t know much about it at all. Take John Lee Hooker, for instance. I couldn’t understand for the life of me what makes him so special.

In addition to being an incredible singer, Ethel Waters was a stage and screen star. One of the biggest stars of her time, it's a little strange that very few people of my generation know who she is. She sang jazz, blues, ballads, and Broadway tunes.
